I wonder if you can help please. I'm producing a feature for broadcast later this year on the ITV Tyne Tees news magazine programme North East Tonight. As part of my report, I'll be looking at the history of the Derwent Tower in Dunston and the future plans for the area.

I'm particularly interested in including old film footage or photographs of the tower during construction or in the first few years after completion. I'm also keen to hear from anyone who would be willing to speak on camera about their reminiscences of the era, particularly if they lived in the Derwent Tower or close to it at this time.

I can be contacted at Graeme.Pickering@itv.com

Many thanks

One of my descendants, Catherine Stoker was, according to the 1851 census a shopkeeper in Whickham. Can you tell me how I can find out where the shop was and what the shop sold?

Thank you
Bren

Congratulations on a great site!
I am trying to find out about the Horsley family who lived in Dunston in the 1920's - specifically William and Sarah Horsley who lived at 13 Collingwood Terrace in 1920 at the time of the birth of their son Walter. I know that William was an Army Pensioner and worked for the roads dept of the Urban District Council. Would be grateful for any info!

I read your stories about the various gravity coal lines with interest, particularly as the last run on the Tanfield incline may have had a relative of mine as Banksman for the last run (Norman Christer). I was born in Pelton Fell, and I know my grandfather lived in Stanley. My other grandfather was Arthur Leggett and he was a manager at Stella Gill Coke Works, and I can't seem to find any information about him or the plant. I know this may be a little way from the Whickham area, but any information would be appreciated.

(Maybe someone can help. Stella Gill is near Pelton. There is something about Stella Gill in 'The Railways Of Consett and North-West Durham' by G Whittle 1971.obtainable from local libraries.(Ed.))

Thanks for the reference to the book 'The Railways of Consett and NW Durham' and I have ordered it from a UK bookseller as I am currently in the US and moving to Mongolia for 3 years soon.
If anyone has any links to the Christer or Clennel families in the region, I would be very interested.

In the Coal and Mining section, under Streetgate and Watergate Colliery, there is a statement that Stephen Varty came from Billy Row to sink the shaft. I believe Stephen to be my Great Grandfather, and would be interested in any records showing his involvement at Watergate Colliery or any stories relating to him.

Anyone remember the APO Number for Bushy Park in the sixties. May have been the same as Denham 218 or So. Ruislip 125. I was in the 3Rd Air Postal at Denham and Ruislip.I collect stuff from the 31 AF stations that we had in the U.K. then. Been to most of them including Bushy, Bovingdon, High Wickomb and even Northolt.

Hi Larry,
Afraid I don't know the APO no. for Bushy
Park.
I was stationed there with the R.A.F. Jan 1949 until April 1950.

The photograph of two ladies standing outside of M A Burns shop. One of them was my husbands grandmother. Imagine his shock when looking through a loose leaf binder in Whickham Library to pass the time waiting for the bus to come across this. She sold the shop to Mrs Reay and she moved over the road to a shop now an undertakers. She sold ice cream and my husbands mother and father used to cycle up from Billingham every weekend to make the ice cream.
