Fellside
Fellside Road runs southwest from Whickham towards Burnopfield, descending the hill to Whickham Golf Club and climbing again to the Woodman's Arms from where it winds along the side of the hill to reach Burnopfield at the Pack Horse pub.

The road commands extensive views over the Derwent Valley to the north and west and passes two farms, the Fellside and the Byermoor. Clockburn Lane runs down from the golf club to the River Derwent and the Derwent Walk. This is an old road which continued up the north side of the Derwent valley to the River Tyne at Newburn. Another track, Woodhouse Lane runs down to Swalwell and another towards Old Hollinside and Snipes Dene Wood.

In the 1950s open-cast mining took place at Cut Thorn on the north side of Fellside Road. Gibside Hall and Estate lies to the north.

My auntie and uncle used to run the Woodsmans Arms in the sixties, does anyone remember the big house across the road from there that fell into disrepair. I remember playing in this in the sixties.

I remember the house. A workmate of my father's lived there in the early 50's. "Lance?". He had a generator, as there was no electricity, I remember that his TV had black bars running through the picture as the generator had a spiky output. (Pontop Pike wasn't far away, and opened in 1953, I left the NE in 1956.) He may have worked for Wilkinson and Dowson's brewery in Scotswood, or Huwoods on the TVTE. Later, in the late 70's, I met 3 Geordie girls in Poros (Greek Island, the one not far from Athens), and one of them knew the place well, and may have lived there; can't remember exactly when. If you ever read this, "3 Pints" Hi!, (Milk, not Amstel!)

When living at Marley Hill we used to walk over the fields to Fellside Road where there was a blacksmiths on the other side of the road and a large house in a group of trees which we were led to believe was haunted. Also opposite the golf club there was a hill which we called 'Forsters Rush' which we were told was where the Cavaliers charged the Roundheads in the Civil War, well enacted by a group of 10/11/12 year olds.
