About Whickham Web Wanderers

This project researches the oral history of the villages of Dunston, Marley Hill, Streetgate, Sunniside, Swalwell and Whickham from 1900 to 2000

There were two reasons for deciding to concentrate on this period. First, much has already been written about Whickham and District before 1900. Second, it is to be an oral history!

We aim to show the dramatic changes in lifestyles.

Rural views to urban sprawl.
Mud tracks to the Western Bypass
Shanks’s pony to two car families
Major industries disappeared
Through times good and bad
War! Peace! Strikes! Depression!
They managed to party!

When researching notable dates for the history section we found that the first date of interest for 1900 was of a most unusual party in Whickham Axwell Colliery! Then we found some more. We would very much like to hear from you of more special celebrations or street parties.

We are using the following headings-

Buildings
Leisure
History
People
Industry
Services

For the people section we are collecting memories of-

Childhood
The ‘coiner’ so named because you ‘coined aroond thi corners like’, was the summer-time equivalent of the sledge.

Shopping
Nellie Ralph selling fish and chips from her scullery on Fridays that she had cooked in her set-pot.

Working life
“Working as a supervisor of the shorthand writers who worked at the courts in the area, all male, who had to achieve 200 words per minute

On the dole
“stuffing his shoes with newspaper to achieve a height of 5 feet 3 inches required to apply for the job of a dustbin man (now a refuse collector)"

Wartime
“Nick Timbey, a non commissioned officer survived Dunkirk only to be killed on the Dutch/German border on the last day of the war. The whole village was devastated.

Leisure activities
“Making bats and balls to play cricket “Playing Marbles, Sledging “Making kites with pieces of wood, newspaper and string.

Domestic chores
“Washing days! Getting up early to light the fire under the set pot, ladling boiling water into the poss- tub, then bang, bang, bang with the poss-stick. Etc. Etc. Etc. Etc.

We do want memories of younger people. To date the memories we have are mainly of the twenties, thirties and forties. You, your relatives, friends, and neighbours could help by agreeing to an interview or by jotting down some information for us. Remember the period is 1900-2000.

We are a very small group, twelve members! We really do need your help, in all parts of the project. We would very much like to hear from you.

Perhaps you know of street parties and other special celebrations. We need information about local celebrities and characters, from all parts of the Twentieth Century in all six villages

We particularly would like memories from childhood from the sixties to the year 2000

Perhaps you have some precious old Photographs. (We can scan them whilst you watch!)

We look forward to hearing from you.

Dear Sirs

Your Image Gallery of Whickham contains a 'photo of the Ross family pictured outside a house at the side of Rose Villa (namely Pudd 'n Poke). This was my grandmother and her siblings. Do you by any chance know who took the picture, please?

Thank you for any help you can give,
Sandra Underwood
