Marley Hill - Community Centre
The former Miners' Institute now Marley Hill and District Community Centre was built by Shield Brothers, Clavering Works, Swalwell. It was opened in 1936 by their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of York shortly before they became King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. It replaced the old institute and reading room in Post Office Row.

My grandad and grandmother were caretakers of the then institute Jack and May Morton who had 2 children Whinham (my mother) and Jack, I was born at 42 Cuthbert Street in 1942 and can remember the air raid shelters down the middle of the streets and when they were knocked down we lived next door to the Greens children Billy and Audrey,
I can remember going with Jimmy Finegan to help pump the organ at the church for evensong and christenings.
My grandad also looked after the bowling green and I remember the Bobby Thomson concert at the institute. My grandad was later hurt at an accident at Blackburn Fell drift. Jack Morton my uncle finished his mining career at Marley Hill Collery as windenman (I think thats how you spell it)

Albert Einstein: "The wireless telegraph is not difficult to understand. The ordinary telegraph is like a very long cat. You pull the tail in New York, and it meows in Los Angeles. The wireless is the same, only without the cat."
