Lily Butler
Lily was a noted milliner with a clothes shop in Whickham, ladies came from as far away as Hexham to buy her hats. She married late in life to Billy Fishburn, the postmaster. Unfortunately, he only lived a few years after the marriage. She then retired and went to live in a bungalow at the top of Carr's Bank. Lily was a very nice person and well liked in the area.

In the early 1930s my mother Lily Donnelly worked for Lily Butler as a sort of appentice, she walked to Whickham from Dunston every day. During her lunch hour she used to visit her grandmother Mrs Margaret Donnelly who live in Church Chare. I think Mum carried on working for Lily Butler right up until she married my dad (Billy Burn from Dunston) in 1938. She has great admiration for Miss Butler and from her she acquired a love of smart hats - in fact she always wore very smart hats up until she died
