The Sun - Swalwell
The Sun was built in 1895, a Lady called Eileen Clavering had been the Proprietor there for many years. The present Manager, Mark Jobling has only been at the pub for three months but he had been manager of the Three Tuns for many years prior to its closure in 2000.

I am rearching the genealogy of the Slater family in Swalwell/Whickham. One relation, Mrs Mary Ann Forster is listed in Whelan's History, Topography & Directory of Durham (1894) as a victauler for the Sun Inn public house in Swalwell. There is also evidence that her mother, Elizabeth, also held this post before her. As this particular pub does not appear to have existed before 1895, I was wondering if anyone out there knew of the existence of another Sun Inn in Swalwell before this date. I do know that a Sun Inn existed in Sunniside about 1850 - could this possibly be the same pub? I would be grateful for any information. Thanks.
