The Cross Keys Public House - Dunston
The Cross Keys Public House, on Ravensworth Road has had and has see many changes over the years. The building is one of Dunstons finest building after its refurbishment in the late seventies.
The Name Cross Keys, was a common sight prior to the Reformation, being the emblem of St Peter. Later the sign had a significance when watchmen kept guard throughout the night on behalf of the community.

Hi
My grandfather was the publican at the Cross Keys approximately 1912, his name was either George Robert Moffat or Robert George Moffat. Do you have any further information on his time there and where he moved onto??
thanks, Heather Atkinson

Can anyone tell me when the Cross Keys in Dunston was built?

Hi there, I'm not sure when it was built, however the Cross Keys looks very similar in architecture to a pub near me, The Oddfellows in Thornaby on Tees (see google earth: postcode TS17 0AA), which was built around 1899/1900 I believe. The "Oddies" as its known was also built by the Camerons brewery.

We do not know when the Cross Keys was built and it was not originally a Camerons house. But it could be that the architect was the same as for the Oddfellows at Thornaby although that style is not unusual for a pub. The pub is now closed (November 2011) and the distinctive large keys that hung on the front were removed several years ago.

Hi - I remember about 10 years ago, there was a picture inside the then Cross Keys of the Cross Keys when it was just a white singular building, the exact same as this picture of the Rising Sun here on Whickham Web Wanderers.

If i get a chance I'm gonna try and get a photocopy of the picture, someday hopefully.
