Dunston - Atkinson Square

Atkinson Square was flats and was not really a square. The Sowerby and Hedley families lived there in the 1920s. A Sowerby brother and sister married a Rutherford brother and sister from near-by Stokoe Square.

At the bottom of Atkinson Square was a pub called The Skiff and it was owned/managed by Mr and Mrs Buttery. When she died, her son and married daughter, Mrs Penman, took over the management of it.

Interesting to read about Atkinson Square. My father Walter Frost lived there as a child (born 1911) with his brothers and sisters. Archie, Charlie, Tommy, Hannah, Peggy and Sally. Sally is the only surviving family member and lives in Buffalo, USA but could recall so many families who lived in the 'Squares.

My great grandmother Margaret Maddison (nee Brown) lived at 13 Atkinson Square at the time of the 1901 census, with her first husband Christopher Maddison and children Annie, Minnie and Elizabeth. Some time after then, she and her children entered the Newcastle Workhouse. I found the webwanderers website very interesting. Christopher was a coal hewer and aged 37 at the time and I am trying to find out what happened to cause the family to become so poor. He was still alive so possibly out of work or disabled. Margaret married my great-grandfather, Joseph Hoffman, some years later.
